어둠 속에서 한기를 느꼈어
공원에는 간간이 비가 내리고
강 남쪽에서 멈추어 서서
꼼짝도 하지 않았지
어떤 밴드가 Dixie(*)를 계속 연주하고 있고
그 음악소리를 들으면 기분이 좋아
안으로 들어섰지만 사람은 별로 많지 않았어
Jazz를 듣기 위해 빗속에서
안으로 들어섰지
이런 연주를 하는 경쟁자들도 많고
또 다른 곳에서도 이런 연주는 많이 하지만
런던시내 남쪽에서는
이 곳의 horn 연주에서 들을 수 있는
싸운드를 내는 곳은 흔치 않아
기타 연주자 George를 봐 그는 모든 코드를 알고 있어
정확한 리듬감으로 소릴 지르거나 노래를 부르진 않아
그가 음악을 연주하기 위해
조명아래에서 일어났을 때,
단지 낡은 기타 하나가 그가 보여줄 수 있는 전부야
Harry는 멋지게 무대에 등장하는 데에는
별 관심이 없어
그는 낮에 직장이 있고 일도 잘하고 있지
다른 것과 마찬가지로 honky tonk(*)도 연주할 수 있지
[Swing*의 황제]들과 함께 금요일 밤을 지내기 위해
일주일을 열심히 살고 있지
구석진 자리에서 젊은이들 한 무리가 어슬렁 거리고 있네
술에 취했고 갈색의 헐렁한 옷과
밑창이 평평한 신발로 차려 입었네
트럼펫을 연주하는 밴드를 향해
한마디 야유도 하지 않는 군...
그들이 원하는 로큰롤을 연주하지 않는데도 말야..
[Swing의 황제]들은 Creole(*)을 연주했어
타임벨이 울리는 바로 그 때
그는 마이크 앞으로 곧장 다가서서는
이렇게 말하네
"감사합니다. 이젠 마칠 시간이에요. 안녕히 가십시오"
그리곤 한마디 재빨리 덧붙이길
"우리는 [Swing의 황제]에요
